Top 5 Comedy Clubs in London

Let's face it, London can be pretty grim. It's grey, usually raining, overcrowded, rushed, you get the picture. So every once in a while, for your own good,  you need to have a laugh and thankfully London is home to over 30 recognised comedy clubs to supply just that for you. I had a look at the top 5 clubs in the city to deliver you the best gags.

5. Laugh Out London

Not so much a comedy venue, LOL is a pop-up comedy night that happens in different venues around the city, predominantly in Camden, Brixton, Stoke-Newington and Islington. The night has became hugely popular due to the star line up who take to the stage, for usually a very reasonable price (normally no more than £8!). Stars such as TV's Harry Hill and John Kearns are no strangers to LOL, but to attend the nights you have to be in the know, keeping an eye out on their website and Facebook for the nights that happen at very short notice. This is one for the comedy heads who really apprecite a good laugh and that's why it's landed itself on no.5 of Londons top comedy clubs.

4. Picadilly Comedy Club

Taking things into the heart of the Central London, Picadilly Comedy Club is a big favourite among tourists and Londoners. Pretty much guarenteed the only comedy club in the centre that charge under a tenner. The room is pretty basic, situated upstairs above the comedy bar, its dimly lit and filled with plastic chairs. But don't let that put you off, the clubs promoters are contastly sourcing out new breakthrough talent aswell as well known names. Nights are on Thursday-Sunday every week, so you have no excuse to get down and catch some top class acts for a reasonable price in the city centre.

3. The Comedy Store

This is the Veteran of the list, still going strong afer being established back in 1979. The Comedy Club is notorious in London's comedy scene, a much respected venue, also based in Picadilly, but is on a different level than the Picadilly Comedy Club. Where the previous club was a good cheap night out, this one is pretty expensive (£14-£25), especially for students, but it's a great night out for special occaisons and dates. The residents, the Comedy Store Players are on every Wednesday and Sunday, providing top notch improv as well as great line ups throughout the week. Don't sleep on the opportunity to check out this intimate club for a night you won't forget.

2.Banana Cabaret

Had to show south on the river some love on the list. This weekend only club has been providing laughter to the people of South London for thirty years now, and shows no signs of slowing down. The first thing you notice is the stunning interior, as a quaint pub has been transformed into a theatre. The club is ran by Daniel Vickers, who has been booking acts since it first opened, giving many of todays famous comics their big break. These famous comics return the favour by popping in for shows in the Banana Cabaret on a fairly regualar basis for the crowd pleasing price of £11. The venue is also host for the Balham Comedy Festival which takes place for a week in July, so with such dedication to the comedy scene over time, it surely deserves to land itself on number 2 of the list.

1. Angel Comedy.

Students rejoice, free comedy every night of the week! Angel Comedy has been a hot spot on the North London comedy scene for a while now, getting more and more busy as time goes on. Get down early because it's usually rammed with ques stretching down the street and people often get turned away if they don't make it on time, but don't let that put you off. The club sports a fantastic beer garden where you can have a date with amber before getting yourself into the que before the masses start to arrive. Carefully hand-picked acts as well as new talent both share the stage giving a great variety to the night and the atmosphere is one not to be missed as the crowd are all simply there just for a good time. Don't forget to give a fair donation at the bucket on the way in, nights like this need support.
