Sundays with your girlfriends are a special treat, and after you've exhausted the shops a spot of lunch is in order. In contrast to my usual love for a full on roast on a Sunday, during a trip to Angel with my wonderful friend Sasha we snuck in to Vineyard on Upper Street. Vineyard is a trendy bar that mixes old with new. There is a huge white marble arch as you arrive at the bar area, plush comforting leather seats are alongside large dome like table settings and at the back there is a giant rubix cube.
I ordered a warming hot chocolate which was a little cold but came in a huge tankard mug so I can't complain. I am a big fan of large tea/coffee/hot chocolate mugs. Unless you are in a formal situation, such as afternoon tea, I see nothing wrong with a mug o' brew and a couple of biscuits- sounds like heaven to me.
I also grabbed a Crayfish salad, which was bright and zesty and cured any hangover or headache. I'm not a huge crayfish fan, but the egg yolk proved a delicious sauce to lighten the crayfish flavour. However, I really didn't feel the fennel had any excuse for being on that plate. It made the whole thing just taste so strongly of aniseed. It needed to be roasted or braised or something to add an extra element to strong, tough slices of fennel.
The Vineyard can be found at 179 Upper Street, N1 1RG. It serves as a restaurant from mid-day onwards and becomes a trendy bar until 11pm during the week at 2am Friday and Saturday. Best for lunch dates with the girls.
